I've been doing some thinking and I've decided there are two main TEEN audiences out there that people write for. And for lack of better titles than these, I have named them the 'Nerds' and the 'Popular crowd'.
There has been so much conversation on the writerly web in which people wonder how much swearing (if at all) or sex (heebiejeebies) writers should put into teen books. This is my conclusion...
The popular crowd probably wants these things, but the nerds want something with more intelectual stimulus in it.
I write for the nerds. I guess I would have to put my teen-aged self in that category. I always liked a 'little' romance, but the plot is what got me going (still gets me going). And so that is what I put into my books. A little romance, a lot of thinking, sprinkled with some soul searching. True-to-life experiences mixed with a little magic/Scifi. None of that depressing teen-got-pregnant-and-is-abused sort of thing. Now, I may not win any awards because of that, but who wants to be that depressed when reading anyway? For me, books are an escape. I want to experience things that I wouldn't be able to experience in the real world, but be able to relate to the MC as well.
What I'm trying to say is : "Stay on your side of the line." JK, NO not really. I am saying there is a place for everyone and I'm glad there is a place for me and my loves/passions.
So...What do you write? I'd love to hear.
ps. don't forget to come on over on the 20th of Nov. for guest bloggers and contest!!!

I get what you mean. I don't think I could write about the really angsty stuff because I had enough of that in my real life and writing about that is not an escape... at all.
Lovely! Very well-done! :)
great post, I am interesting in it!
